  Book Reviews: 'The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter' and 'Bullpen Diaries: Mariano Rivera, Bronx Dreams, Pinstripe Legends, and the Future of the New York Yankees'. This book, “Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain”, is spectacular. If you can get through this book without getting choked up, then you possess impressive resolve. The author, Marty Appel, worked in the Yankees’ media relations department for most of Munson’s time with the Yankees, and this book has sort of a meta quality to it.

I know I’m a couple of months late on this, but I finally got around to finishing Ian O’Connor’s book The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter.. O’Connor makes it known in the introduction.   I recently finished the book on a quest to continue building my Yankee knowledge base, and I came away impressed by O’Connor’s work. The Captain is about the life of the current Yankees.   New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner appoints shortstop Derek Jeter honorary captain of team, nominal title given for only 11th time in Yankees history; photos (M).

  His accolades include 14 All-Star selections, five Gold Glove Awards, five Silver Slugger Awards, two Hank Aaron Awards, and a Roberto Clemente Award. .   Eventually, Jeter and A-Rod reconcile as the Yanks’ Captain brings Alex “back into the fold.” He is embraced, and the Yankees win the World Series. It was Jeter’s crowning moment. “Jeter did not just embody the pride of the Yankees as much as any mythic figure before him,” O’Connor writes, returning to his favorite metaphor. He looks at how the Captain overcame a sea of emotions to deliver one final victory on a signature single the other way.
